Gourmand perfume smells almost edible, featuring notes such as vanilla, chocolate, coffee, caramel, and almonds.
"Perfume is the art that makes memory speak." Francis Kurkdjian
In our new series of articles about the different smells in perfumery, we have a French feast of perfumes and foods for you to sample.
1. Sweet Notes In History And Today
Floral scents dominate and have stood the test of time, but Eve was the first to use the scent of apples in the Garden of Eden.
A new era begun when perfumers started exploring fragrances from different sources surrounding them. Vanilla fragrances took a major role in the creations since the late 1800s. The gourmand fragrances had to wait till the 90's when Thierry Mugler's iconic Angel became popular. More And More Gourmand Notes Are Used, Also Called Greedy Notes as they are almost good enough to eat. Gourmand notes Are Sugary, Acidic, Sour But Also include Sparkling Aromatic Notes That Characterize Food And Drinks. Some Evoke Childhood Memories And Others Project Into The Future. Unpredictable and playful, gourmand notes are loved by perfumers. Some have long been used, such as vanilla and honey, while others have become part of the olfactory pyramids recently, like marshmallows.
The greedy notes add almost unlimited nuances to various essences. They can be mischievous, sometimes transgressive, tender, delicate and undoubtedly playful.
2. Scent Of the Perfume
As it was said perfume is the art that makes memory speak. To describe the scent of gourmand perfume and cologne we have to trigger your memory! Imagine the smell of:
* Chocolate caramel coffee.
* Fruit praline cookies.
* Milk whipped cream.
* Chocolate milk pralines.
* Foodie notes with vanilla or resins and some spices.
* Boozy vanilla.
* The smell of a bakery.
* A patisserie with steamy croissants.
* Tonka beans, cacao, caramel, cherry.
* Something you remember, the taste and the smell good enough to eat.
* Tonka beans, pralines, cognac, vanilla, sandalwood, oak.
* Whipped cream with banana leaf, orange and clover.
* Vanilla and resinous touches.
* Red berries, spices, cardamom and apples.
A fragrance with gourmand notes becomes seductive and intriguing if there are feminine, sophisticated and coherent elements in the composition, even if in apparent contrast with the playful and childish side.
3. How Would You Feel Wearing A Gourmand Perfume
Quotes from those that are wearing gourmand scents:
"God, A*men is and will always be my favorite gourmand perfume. it is the bottle that opened up the world of perfumery to me!"
"A pleasant gourmand scent can improve my mood and lift my spirits"
"I looooveee gourmand scents!!!! But I don't wear it for no pineal blood flow, I wear it because it's amazing."
And you will say: "From the first spray I immediately felt a discreet sweetness, never cloying, which gradually melted into my skin releasing an intense aroma of vanilla and caramel" continuing by trying to explain more "Do you know when you see a loving couple walking? Their looks, their hugs and their expressions. I don't know about you, but they inevitably lead me to smile and imagine the feeling they are experiencing at that moment. A warm gourmand scent expresses the same emotion. Just "taste" it once, to feel as if embraced by the person who made your heart beat the most, making you intoxicated by its warm sensuality. It is not just a perfume, but a gesture that gives sweetness and warmth."
4. Gourmand Perfume
4.1 Nectarine Blossom & Honey Cologne, Jo Malone
Nectarine Blossom & Honey Cologne is a floral fruity gourmand fragrance for women and men. It is a beautiful rendition of a day spent in an English garden during summertime - one of the best gourmand colognes available!
This gourmand cologne opens with a juicy, fleshy nectarine and peach blend, which is actually quite realistic. The hint of black currant creates a slightly richer scent. The more the fragrance develops, the juicier it becomes.
The peach note is so potent in this fragrance that it nearly overshadows the nectarine. This is not a very sweet fragrance. The honey note is very subtle and remains in the background. Petitgrain adds a nice green hint to this scent.
The dry down introduces a green, slightly dry vetiver note. Vetiver works well in this composition, however the way it has been blended with the peach and nectarine may take some getting used to.
This fragrance remains fresh as the day progresses without smelling artificial. The longevity is moderate for a cologne, and the sillage is intimate. You may have to re-apply during the course of the day.
Nectarine, Blossom & Honey Cologne is ideal to wear during the day. Best suited for warmer seasons. Pair this fragrance with a refined look and you’re good to go.
Top Notes: Green Notes, Black Currant, Petitgrain
Middle Notes: Nectarine, Black locust
Base Notes: Peach, Plum, Vetiver
4.2 Trésor L'Eau de Parfum, Lancôme
Trésor L'Eau de Parfum is an enchanting fragrance for women. It was released in 1990 and is still very popular.
The opening is highlighted by a bouquet of fragrant powdery, fruity and floral notes that will bring a sensual, calming and soft perfumed sensation. It takes a few minutes for the peach, bergamot, and lilac to come to the fore. The heart is really warm and floral. It dries down to a very powdery, woody amber composition.
Trésor L'Eau de Parfum is a complex gourmand scent - romantic and elegant. If you’re a lover of fruity, floral gourmand perfumes with oriental depth then this is the one for you.

4.3 The Gourmand Fragrance That I Love: Thierry Mugler's Angel Eau de Parfum
Thierry Mugler's Angel Eau de Parfum was launched in 1992 - it in fact started the gourmand fragrance genre. Angel, an oriental vanilla fragrance, was created by Olivier Cresp and Yves de Chirin.
Cotton candy and coconut is paired with fruity and citrusy opening notes. Honey, berries and fruit complement floral and spicy notes for the heart of the fragrance. And chocolate, caramel and vanilla are paired with patchouli, tonka bean, amber, musk and sandalwood in the base notes.
A complex fragrance, Angel's main accords are fruity, sweet and powdery. Angel is a memorable scent that will gently stir your own memories of sweet delights.

4.4 Penhaligon's Juniper Sling Eau de Toilette
Juniper Sling is a woody spicy fragrance for women and men, but it leans slightly more masculine. It was launched in 2011.
It opens with a realistic gin and tonic scent at first spray, full of juniper berries and aromatic freshness. Yet it is much more than a simple G&T. The scent mellows with the help of pepper and cardamom. The orris wood adds a touch of powder to the composition. And soon it becomes warmer with the leather adding just the right amount of warmth. Juniper Sling has a faint touch of sweetness to it, and a faint touch of bitterness, but is overall just very tangy and herbal.
Eventually it fades into a light caramel scent that stays close to the skin.
Juniper Sling is very suitable for a hot weather, when other perfumes are too much. Longevity and projection is somewhat weak, so you may need to re-apply.
Top Notes: Juniper Berries, Angelica, Orange, Cinnamon
Middle Notes: Pepper, Cardamom, Leather, Orris root
Base Notes: Vetiver, Sugar, Cherry, Amber
4.5 Viktor & Rolf Bonbon Eau de Parfum
Bonbon is one of the most interesting floral fruity gourmand perfumes for women. It was launched in 2014.
It opens with fresh sweet citrus which tone down quite quickly, and evolves into a very sweet, highly fructose corn syrup citrus with caramel undertones. There is definitely a gentle floral honey nectar quality as well. As the citrus calms down a bit, you can smell the caramel and amber which is actually really nice! Later, the guaiac and cedar woods come through to cut through the sweetness.
The amber in Bonbon is what gives this perfume some grounding and makes a clear distinction of sophistication. The base does retain some of the fruit, floral & citrus notes but they are however quite faint.
A young but sophisticated scent, Bonbon is very long lasting, and the sillage is quite strong. The warm qualities of this fragrance makes it particularly well suited to fall and winter days.
Top Notes: Peach, Mandarin orange, Orange
Middle Notes: Caramel, Orange blossom, Jasmine
Base Notes: Amber, Sandalwood, Guaiac wood, Cedar
4.6 Blue Mediterraneo Mandorlo Di Sicilia Eau de Toilette by Acqua Di Parma
Blue Mediterraneo Mandorlo Di Sicilia is an amber floral fragrance for women, but men can certainly wear it too. An unusual take on gourmand colognes, Blue Mediterraneo Mandorlo Di Sicilia is all about bitter almonds, and was inspired by Sicily.
Blue Mediterraneo Mandorlo Di Sicilia opens with a moderate projection of sweet almond and anise notes. The anise gives an aromatic and spicy tone and cuts through the sweetness. The almond note is very natural and nutty. The opening is warm, sweet, with a touch of orange. The bergamot is a distant note.
The peach and ylang-ylang found in the mid notes add to the sweetness and enhances the fruity character of the fragrance. The jasmine is just a faint scent in the background. As the fragrance commences to dry down, the vanilla and tolu balsam come up enveloping all notes in a very sweet resin aroma. The musk and cedarwood join the blend but their scents are very subtle. Most of the notes come up and stay from the opening to the dry down of the fragrance.
Blue Mediterraneo Mandorlo Di Sicilia is long lasting, and the sillage is moderate. This versatile gourmand EDT can be worn all year round, except on very hot days.
Top Notes: Green Almond, Star Anise, Orange, Bergamot
Middle Notes: White Peach, Ylang-ylang, Jasmine

4.7 Lira Eau De Parfum by Xerjoff
Lira is a delicious amber floral fragrance for women - a gentle, delicate, tender, lavish, rich and extraordinary gourmand bouquet.
Lira opens with a very realistic rush of blood orange. The heady jasmine, warm cinnamon and sweet licorice root are perfectly balanced in the heart notes. Then it develops into an addictive mix of caramel and vanilla with spicy notes, mainly from the cinnamon.
The lavender note is most prominent in cold weather and adds a nice balance to the sweetness. The citrus notes never fully disappear, they linger in the background throughout. The dry down produces the very best of vanillas.
This is a stunning, high quality scent - one of the best gourmand fragrances available. Lira is extremely long lasting, and the sillage is strong. It’s warm, but soft enough that you can wear it all year round.
Top Notes: Blood orange, Bergamot, Lavender
Middle Notes: Cinnamon, Licorice, Jasmine
Base Notes: Caramel, Vanilla, Musk
4.8 Palo Santo Eau de Parfum by Carner Barcelona
Palo Santo is a gourmand eau de parfum for women and men - an exceptional gourmand-vetiver scent.
Palo Santo opens with artemisia and a milky, boozy rum accord. It’s sugared without being sweet, with a wonderful gourmand scent and slightly earthy goodness. The sugared aspect begins to retreat as the perfume starts to become a bit more woody. The guaiac wood starts to become prominent and almost dominates the perfume. But it is a creamy, earthy and mildly spiced wood scent. Then the wood is tempered quickly by the addition of vetiver which helps to balance the fragrance.
After about 30 minutes, the perfume begins to blend with hints of incense and tonka bean sitting on top of a woody base that is full of cream. The dry down is strongly led by vanilla. A sweet, balsamic vanilla finishes the scent.
This is a very wearable fall gourmand fragrance. It is warm and welcoming, but also deep and enigmatic. Palo Santo is very long lasting, with a moderate sillage.
Top Notes: Rum, Artemisia
Middle Notes: Milk, Tonka bean, Guaiac wood
Base Notes: Vanilla, Vetiver, Sandalwood
