The Best Shalimar Eau de Parfum
Shalimar was created by Jacques Guerlain in 1925, as a tribute to the legendary love story between Emperor Shahjahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. According to legend, before he became emperor his name was Prince Khurram. The twenty-year-old Prince Khurram met a young girl, named Arjumand Banu at the bazaar where her family worked. The young man was mesmerized by her beauty and, after becoming emperor, he made her his wife as Mumtaz Mahal, meaning the "Jewel of the Palace". After the wedding, the prince and Mumtaz were inseparable. She gave birth to 13 children and died during the birth of their 14th child at the age of 39. Her death devastated Shahjahan. He built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife and their undying love. Shalimar is named after ‘The Gardens of Shalimar’ - Mumtaz’s favorite garden.
Guerlain Shalimar is without a doubt the best Guerlain perfume ever and its magic is undeniable. An amber spicy oriental fragrance, it is creamy, smoky, moody, and resinous. Shalimar is an absolutely essential component of any perfume collection.
The most prominent opening accord for Shalimar is citruses. Soon after that, Shalimar becomes a thick, dreamy haze of smoky incense, sweet resin, dark rich vanilla, and leather so creamy is seems to melt into the vanilla. In the beginning, each note is distinct, yet there is a sense that they are all in the process of blending inseparably into the whole that is Shalimar.
The vanilla and incense are perfectly balanced, unifying the fragrance with their sweet creaminess. Meanwhile, in the background, the floral mid notes and residual citrus top notes linger, adding depth and dimension without drawing focus.
Shalimar is best worn on cooler evenings in fall and winter, or for special daytime occasions. It is extremely long lasting, and the beautiful sillage is strong. You should wear Shalimar when you’re on top of the world and want to be noticed!

The History Of Guerlain Perfumes
Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain (1798 – 1864) was a chemist, explorer and inventor. He founded the House of Guerlain Perfumes in 1828. So successful were the perfumes produced by Guerlain that in just 50 years it became “Her Majesty’s Patented Perfumer” for Empress Eugenie. It was the most highly regarded House in all the courts of Europe.
At those times, fragrances strived to reproduce scents from nature. Aime Guerlain (1834 – 1910) broke with this tradition in 1889. He brought synthetic notes into the natural composition of perfume. The result was a perfume named Jicky; it was unique, unsettling and intoxicating.
Jacques Guerlain (1874 – 1963) was a romantic who saw the making of fragrances as an art form. This prolific creator was responsible for some 400 perfumes, including Shalimar. He also found a physical home for the House at 68 Champs-Elysees.
Jean-Paul Guerlain (born in 1937) was called the Marco Polo of perfumes. He is an avid traveler and spent long periods living alone on plantations to cultivate his creativity. Jean-Paul created many of the House’s most successful fragrances including Habit Rouge for men, Aqua Allegoria and Samsara.
Today the House of Guerlain is led by perfumer Thierry Wasser – a worthy successor to the four generations of Geurlain perfumers.
This list offers some of the best Guerlain perfumes you can buy from the legendary French perfume house. Founded in 1828, Guerlain has always used luxurious and rare materials for its perfumes, such as French vanilla and ylang-ylang grown at their own plantations in the Comoro Islands. In addition, Guerlain has been at the forefront in the use of synthetic materials: Jicky (1889) was the first perfume to which Aimé Guerlain added the synthetic component coumarin.
Still hugely popular, today Guerlain scents are made in Orphin on the outskirts of the Rambouillet forest in France. Here, traditional craftsmanship is integrated into the efficiency of modern production lines. The 120 employees work together to produce and package 13 million bottles every year. Everything is "home made" to extremely high standards of quality and excellence.
